Place #3: Lake of Bays, ON

I call my friends from university the M&Ms – their names all start with M. And ever since university has ended, we’ve made a effort to hangout as a group in person. This weekend was one of the occasions where all of our schedules lined up and we were all free for a weekend getaway. We were originally going to spend the weekend in Waterloo, but last minute had the option to go to Mara’s cottage in Muskoka. Obviously, we took it.

For all intents and purposes, this ‘cottage’ is a townhouse. Very different from my grandparent’s cottage that I used to go to as a child. Although the benefits of having a cottage like Mara’s is that you can visit year round. It was a quick trip; we arrived Saturday evening and left Sunday afternoon. The weather was surprisingly pleasant, above zero for most of the weekend. It was great to get out of the city and breathe in the crisp Muskoka air. You don’t realize how dirty the air is in the city until you leave it. We took a dip in the hot tub, which was amazing. I never understood people going hot tubbing in the winter. I get it now.

This morning we took a walk around the property, where there are a number of cottages and amenity buildings. There is a small lake (which is technically a river) very close to the cottage. Some of it was frozen over, and it was stunning. The water was reflecting everything.

After our walk, we played pool, where I was much more successful than anticipated. We had bacon grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup for lunch. Then we headed off to avoid driving in the dark. It was a quick trip, but it was a lot of fun to see my M&Ms again, and to spend the weekend away from the city.

My other new places this week were:

  • Momofuku, which translates literally to ‘lucky peach’, a ramen restaurant
  • Hogtown Vegan, for a friend’s birthday brunch (I don’t frequent vegan restaurants on my own)
